SARDEGNA | HOW A SAFETY PLAN OF A WRC
ROUND COMES OUT
In 2007 the FIA
Organization declared the Rally d’Italia
Sardegna as the most safety Round of the
whole WRC. Germany and Norway got a very
similar result. What does a Safety Plan
Organization mean? How many people are
really in charge with this fundamental
item? Even this year the “Safety Plan”
considers all the aspects of a WRC race
with the important goal to be the
fastest we can to rescue in emergency
situations herewith all the “numbers”
for a safety plan.
A large amount of means and men have
been considered along the whole
itinerary. About 720 Marshall, coming
from all the ACI delegations all over
Italy, will be located along the
itinerary each 300 m.. They can be
considered as real sentinels, people in
charge with the control of spectators’
positions inside the dedicated areas. In
those areas dedicated to the spectators,
the Marshall’s number is larger in order
to manage the situation in a better way.
If the Spectators’ areas are very close
to some crossing points with Provincial
or more traffic roads, Marshalls are
supported by the Police.
A peculiar figure is represented by the
Media Assistants, dedicated Marshall to
the 300 accredited photographers and
journalists.
In order to make clear the difference
between the spectators’ and the media’s
areas, pretty 50 km of tapes are located
each day. These tapes are of different
colors: RED for those zones that are
absolutely forbidden to the spectators;
GREEN for all those zones allowed for
supporters and blue for the media
delegates.
About fourteen emergency vehicles are
located along the itinerary: they are
fully equipped and high specialized
personnel on board, always ready to
operate in case of wounded rescue, first
aid or fire extinguishing operations.
Each day 14 ambulances, which ten are
4wd, are distributed along the itinerary
in a distance not larger than 7 km from
each other. An experienced doctor,
specialized in reanimation, and an
assistant are always on board. All the
ambulances are fully equipped. On the
top of the safety pyramid we find the
first-rescue helicopters: 1 dedicated
helicopter for the Race Control,
equipped with HEMS and winch. Three
medical doctors, trained for the
mountain’s rescue and reanimation’s
operations, ready to go in the fastest
way on occasional accident that may
occur. It flies over race’s areas during
the Special Stages. A second helicopter,
fully equipped as the other one, stays
in stand-by in a few minutes distance
from the Stage’s area.
Authorities involved
A large number of people and Authorities
are involved to organize and manage the
Safety Project.
ACI Global, leading society of the
Automobile Club d’Italia Group,
specialized in giving assistance to
vehicles and people, is in charge with
the different aspects of the Safety
Programme and cooperates with the
Sassari’s 118 (medical emergency
assistance) and the Fire Department. The
set up, the re-establishment and the
control of the gravel are successfully
entrusted to the Forest Authority and
the Sardinian Forest Authority. A
fundamental support is given by the
Police – Polizia, Stradale, Carabinieri
e Guardia di Finanza – that is located
along all the itinerary and on the
transfer’s ways. Each of the
aforementioned ones has a Chief Delegate
at the Race Control, ready to cooperate
with the Clerk of the Course in case of
necessity.
Race Control
The project and the managing of the
Safety Plan and of the whole race is
under the Race Control’s duty. Three
Assistants work together with the Clerk
of the Course. Each one follows a single
Special Stage from the set up phase till
its closure. In strictly cooperation the
Safety Deputy checks any emergency’s
situation.
Radio Coverage
Fundamental for the safety is the
radio coverage during the race. Along
the itinerary forty vehicular radios and
something about two hundred handy. The
first ones are located at the beginning,
at the end and at all the intermediate
points of each Stage. The two hundred
portable radios are distributed one each
five hundred meters.
Through the Tracking System, it is
possible for the Race Control to follow
the exact position, in real time, of any
cars racing. In case of an emergency,
Competitors, have just to push a red
button on it, in order to send an
emergency signal to the Race Control.
Spectators’ Vademecum
Although the safety measures already
arranged, it is fundamental to correctly
inform the spectators.
Once the Itinerary has been defined and
the spectators’ and media’s areas have
been well indicated on maps, everyone is
invited to consult them, before the
race, even visiting the web site
www.rallyitaliasardegna.com, clicked by
over than 7,5 millions visitors. Anyway
it is very important to respect some
simple rules:
To arrive at the spectators’ areas
always before first car’s start
To park ONLY in the permitted area in
order not to become an obstacle to the
traffic
To respect Marshall’s indications
Never trespassing the red tapes
entering in those no-way areas, in
particular in the nearby of exit
accesses
Never stay inside the media’s area,
characterised by blue tapes
To stay ONLY in those zones defined by
green tapes
To move just after the passage of the
sweeping car (recognizable by a chess
flag on it). It means that the Stage is
terminated
In case of an accident please contact
immediately the nearest Marshall who
will take care of the situation
Respect all the indication given by
the Organizers and do not forget to
respect the Nature.
